Lissom Spa & Beauty offers the acclaimed, non-invasive facial lifting procedure, Ultherapy, at its beauty clinic in Rosedale, Auckland.

High-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU), also known as Ultherapy or Ulthera, is a non-surgical 'facelift' treatment that lifts, tones, and tightens problem areas around the eyes, face and neck areas effectively and safely, offering a non-invasive, painless alternative to surgical facelifts.

As the only FDA-cleared non-invasive treatment for lifting the skin on the neck, chin and brow, HIFU is also the only non-invasive, FDA-cleared treatment that targets lines and wrinkles stemming down to the neck area as well. The result is tighter, better-fitting skin with a natural look, from the brow to the chest.

How it Works

HIFU uses high intensity focused ultrasound waves at depths of 3.0 and 4.5mm to target the layers of skin just below the surface and to stimulate collagen deep within the skin, with no downtime required. Using a handpiece to focus on targeted areas, the ultrasound energy emitted causes the tissue to heat up rapidly. Once the cells in the targeted area reach a certain temperature, they experience cellular damage. While this may seem counterintuitive, the damage actually stimulates the cells to produce more collagen — a protein that provides structure to the skin.

HIFU RF Comparison

The increase in collagen results in tighter, firmer skin with fewer wrinkles. Since the high frequency ultrasound beams are focused on a specific tissue site below the skin’s surface, there is no damage to the upper layers of the skin and adjacent tissue. Results can be seen instantly, and further lifting and tightening effects can be observed 1-2 weeks post-treatment as collagen continues to be produced.

1-3 treatments can last for approximately 3-5 years.
3-4 treatments can last for approximately 5-7 years.

Benefits of High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound

HIFU has many aesthetic benefits, including:

    • softening frown and smile lines
    • wrinkle reduction
    • tightening sagging skin on the neck
    • lifting the cheeks, eyebrows, and eyelids and tightening the brows
    • firming and enhancing jawline definition
    • tightening of the décolletage
    • smoothing the skin

Study results are promising. A 2017 study involving 32 Korean participants demonstrated that HIFU significantly improved skin elasticity of the cheeks, lower abdomen, and thighs after 12 weeks. In an Aesthetic Surgery Journal study of 93 adults, 64% of those treated with HIFU noted an overall improvement in skin laxity.

According to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS), HIFU and other nonsurgical alternatives to facelifts have seen a major increase in popularity over the last few years. The total number of procedures performed has increased by 64.8% between 2012 and 2017.

HIFU may not be appropriate for everyone. In general, the procedure works best on people older than 30 with mild-to-moderate skin laxity. People with photo-damaged skin or a high degree of loose skin may need several treatments before seeing results. HIFU is not recommended for people with severe cases of laxity and sagging skin, infections and open skin lesions, severe and cystic acne, and extensive photo-ageing in the treatment area.

After HIFU treatments, some patients may experience slight redness, swelling, tingling, or tenderness to the touch, but these are mild and temporary in nature. The post-treatment symptoms you are describing are normal, and will subside over the next several days. We recommend cold compresses rather than warm, but either is fine. Feel free to follow up with your physician as well if you have any specific concerns.

Ultherapy FAQ

Is it safe?
HIFU was is approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and is cleared to perform brow lifts and for improving lines and wrinkles of the upper chest and neckline (décolletage).

HIFU has been found to be a promising treatment that could replace face lifts, especially in younger people who don’t want the risks and recovery time associated with surgery. Several small clinical trials have found HIFU to be safe and effective for facial lifting and refining wrinkles. People were able to see results in a few months after treatment, without the risks associated with surgery.

All medical treatments have risks associated with their use. It is important to select a professional who is experienced in performing any procedure. Potential adverse events associated with HIFU include temporary nerve injury or nerve palsy if the provider treats the area overlying the nerve. Welts or red areas of swelling and bruising are possible. On extremely rare occasions (and never at Lissom Spa & Beauty), thermal burns have been known to occur due to inaccurate position of handpiece technique or patient movement during treatment.

Is it painful?
The sensation is described by many as a "slight punching sensation" when the device is gliding over the areas being treated. Past users have rated it on a pain scale of 3 to 7, depending on where the treatment is focussed. One may be particularly susceptible to pain around boney areas, such as the jawline and forehead. Our approach is to start on a low energy level and gradually work our way up, ensuring that the procedure is as painless as possible.

Do you recommend HIFU for wrinkles and lines around my decolletage area?
We recommend our Multishape treatment programme instead due to the lower frequency of the Multishape machine. Extra caution must be taken when treating the chest area.

How much does a HIFU procedure cost?
Cost varies depending on the areas you are having treated. Lissom Spa & Beauty offers two key packages: $799 for full face, and $999 for full face and neck.

Depending on the results you wish to see, we generally recommend 2 HIFU sessions spaced one year apart for optimal results.
